Samjah Saulsberry is a leading up and coming fashion blogger and we had the chance to sit down with an interview. She's very inspiring. So all you future bloggers out there read on! Also, don't forget to check out the very stylish photos!
How did you become a fashion blogger?
I’ve always loved writing. Ever since I was a young girl, I would write in diaries and journals. I would write stories and anything else that I could write about. This translated into my adult life. I began writing blog posts for news websites and fashion websites, and one day I thought, why don’t I write for my own blog? I started the Fashion Liberation Blog for a t-shirt company my friend and I were running and then I branched out and created my personal blog – Style & Energy.
What inspires you in the creative process?
How would you describe your style. Music, art, watching people, reading, solidarity, listening to people speak their truths..…all of these things inspire me. For instance, I can put a specific song on and start feeling vibes – and it helps me to come up with outfits to match the vibes in the songs or it can help me to come up with inspirational words for my people.
I would describe my style as simple, yet classic. I strongly believe that less is more. I wear the clothes; they don’t wear me. I let my positive aura overpower the outfit – not the opposite.
Most of the threads I wear can be worn for years to come. I’m not super trendy although I will acknowledge some of the latest trends. I like to buy things that last. I have a pair of boots on now that I purchased in 2005!!
When did you get started in the industry?
I got started in the fashion industry around 2005. I interned for a prominent modeling agency in DC that afforded me the opportunity to assist on photo shoots and behind the scenes of runway shows. From then on, I kept finding myself participating in different fashion events……and now I’m here.
Where do you see yourself in the next five years? In the next five years I see myself in a peaceful place. And peace to me is being able to do what I love full time and inspiring others. I see myself blogging full time for myself and other companies. I see myself dressing other people. I see myself writing for publications and reporting on fashion events. This is where I will be in the next five years for sure.
Who influences you (i.e.stylists, designers, fashionistas)?
My mother was my first connection to fashion so she is my biggest influencer. My daddy was big on fashion at one point in his life as well and so were my aunts and grandmother (my mother’s family), therefore fashion is embedded in me. Other than my family, I love Elisa Johnson’s style (Magic Johnson’s daughter) and Tracee Ellis Ross’ style (her stylist on the show Girlfriends was a beast!). I dig whoever styles Rihana as well. He or she is very creative.
I’m a 80s/90s baby so that is my favorite style era, and that’s a style era that influences me a lot. I love the clothes and styles from that era so I will forever infuse that vibe in my style selections.
What's been most challenging about this career?
The challenging part about this career has been the balance between life and work. It’s like I have to make myself have a life now days! All I want to do and all I think about is blogging! It consumes me! I got to get help. LOL.
What would you say to other creatives who want to pursue a career as a fashion blogger?
I would say stop procrastinating; just jump out there and do it. Do your research, but also learn along the way and make mistakes – this makes you better. I would also tell them to use their authentic voice when blogging – be true to who they are. Nothing will ever be perfect, but as long as it’s your true self then you will be able to sleep better at night. There is always someone who benefits when you are speaking your truth.
